Table Runner x 3

This is the third table runner I've posted but I like them. They are pretty straight-forward to make and they can dress up a table without too much immediate risk of being spilled on.

The fabrics were chosen specifically for my mum for a Christmas gift. She has always loved fall colors and these prints reminded me of her. I got the fabrics from Spool of Thread.

As with my other table runners I stacked the fabrics, cut them into squares and then randomly sliced them into patterns. I then switched up the colors and sewed them together. The striped print ended up being more of a rectangle than a square like the second patch, but I just trimmed the edge. My friend brought her quilting mat and roller which I got to try out, just after I told my husband I didn't really think I wanted either for Christmas (I was wrong, oh well, next year...). They worked so well at keeping the lines straight.

I couldn't find a fabric I liked to frame the quilted pieces so I used some tan colored corduroy for the back. A single line stitched 1/4" from the edge framed the runner and finished it nicely.

Not your Grandmother's Tablerunner

Last year I wanted to make something special for my aunt. Having recently made one funky table runner, I started thinking about making one to match my aunt's newly found and newly covered chairs last winter but didn't finish until her birthday in the Springtime. I chose three colors of silk: muted gold, mossy green and dusty rose. I also chose a mottled cotton that included more vibrant versions of all of those colors to bring them all together, and quite reflective of my aunt's hippie spirit.

The photos are limited but I used the same trick here as I did with my first table runner by making squares of all my fabrics and stacking them together. I then randomly cut through all layers and then switched them out when sewing them back together. I don't have great photos but these give you the idea.

I visited my aunt for Thanksgiving and found the runner gracing her coffee table in her Victorian-style living room. Fit perfectly.

Mod Table Runner

Just like my mum made!

I've been saving this fabric forever. I bought it at a cool shop in the Albert district (Bolt Fabric Boutique) with the thought of making it into a couple of pillow cases for my living room. However, there's pink in the fabric and my couch is orange so I'm not sure what I was thinking.

I spent much time thinking over this fabric. Finally yesterday I just started cutting. I placed both pieces face up, one on top of the other and made several long straight cuts. I then traded pieces so I had all opposite pieces. If you haven't done this before it might be easier to experiment with paper first.

I then sewed the pieces together, taking time to iron in between (the magic step!). I bought some plain black craft fabric from my favorite fabric shop (the Textile Clearance shop on Fraser & about 45th), which is unfortunately going out of business, and used it to frame and extend the quilted mirror blocks.
